Sarah Looney, M.Ed., LPC, NCC
Something you may be curious about is why I became a therapist. There’s a long version and a short version, so I think I’ll give you the medium version. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people. I have always enjoyed building relationships with others, and helping where and when I can. I can honestly say I have a lot of life experiences that have helped me with being subjective and have cultivated who I am today.
During my journey, I was able to spend time with people who were different than me, which has helped expand my mind, understand, admire, and connect with people who have a wide variety of views, beliefs, and experiences. After I graduated college, I worked at a community mental health agency that has provided me with a lot of experience in many different areas of mental health. It was a lot of work, but I am truly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many different people, and in different capacities. I have learned to embrace my ADHD and mental health, and use it to strengthen myself.
I am a mother of three wonderful children. My oldest was born with congenital heart disease, dextrocardia, and heterotaxy. He has a lot of physical health issues and is a strong warrior. He is also diagnosed with PTSD, Anxiety, ADHD, and Autism. I am also blessed with a daughter and another son that seem to not have any major health issues. I was married to my high school sweetheart, however we decided we worked better as friends, and divorced after 12 years of marriage. Although it was very toxic, I have learned many life lessons and grown into the person I am today.
I completed my degree at Texas Southern University where I obtained a master’s degree in professional counseling. I am licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. I am also a nationally certified counselor through the NBCC. I have worked across inpatient, outpatient, and agency settings with individual teens, adults, parents, couples, and families. I have trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing (MI). I also use a variety of techniques from other therapy styles to reduce psychological pain related to sadness, stress, and anxiety.
I share all of this with you to give you a better picture of who I am and how I do things. I’m not rigid or super structured, I follow my intuition, and because of my unique upbringing, I am able to connect and empathize with a lot of different people with various backgrounds, values, views, etc. More than anything, this aspect of my life has prepared me to be a therapist.
I am passionate about the human experience, and I currently see my mission as empowering others to explore their identity, discovering their authentic selves, and allow themselves to step into their truth. It is important to know I am on this journey of life myself! I’m not a therapist who thinks she has all the answers, or who’s going to give you my opinions as fact, or who will tell you exactly what you should do. I see my role as a dedicated partner here to collaborate with you and assist you in uncovering all the layers that make you who you are.
